  38. I also recall a post somewhere, back in the Alpha flame thread,
  39. that _did_ bring up the value of benchmarking.  As an Amiga
  40. owner, soon to have to change platforms for LW (and other)
  41. reasons, I second the call.

  43. Benchmarking the various versions/platforms will be of serious
  44. help to a lot of the users on this list (and everyone else) in
  45. making the forthcoming hard choices.

  47. BTW, I spoke Wednesday evening with some SGI people here at their
  48. regional sales office in the Twin Cities.  NOT ONE of them was
  49. yet aware of an SGI Lightwave!  Needless to say, now they are! 
  50. In fact, at one point, the conversation turned to the notion of
  51. SGI bundling LW with an Indy.  (I brought it up.)  A couple of
  52. their reps thought it was a cool idea to sell a few more boxes,
  53. but I don't recall any of them rushing to phone Mountain View. 
  54. They have, of course, recently acquired Alias and Wavefront, but
  55. I made _very_ sure to mention the large and enthusiastic user
  56. base Lightwave could bring to them.  Also, did anyone know they
  57. are now bundling Photoshop with Indys under the name "Webstation"
  58. or something like that?  They do this, so I thought...well...you
  59. know...

  81. Mike, pardon my impertinence here, but isn't having some
  82. realistic means of comparison among various combinations of
  83. program and platform a contribution to effectiveness of use?  In
  84. a time when people have to make the aforementioned tough
  85. financial (and emotional) decision to move beyond the Amigas they
  86. have come to be at home with, isn't it a _good_ idea that some
  87. _well-reasoned_ discussion of price/performance/etc. take place? 
  88. Many people who use Lightwave also use it as part of a
  89. Toaster/Flyer system, including rendering to the Flyer for
  90. compositing or just to get it out to tape.  Doesn't this fall
  91. under the "effectiveness" umbrella?

  93. I take exception to the nature of your comments, but agree in
  94. principle that effective use is the raison d'etre of this list. 
  95. It just covers a bit more ground than you're looking at.
